Couples Counseling

Couples Counseling

Couples often complain of having the same fights with the same unhelpful conclusion over and over, or they realize that they are in a pattern of becoming more and more distant over time.  Couples can often tell that they are stuck in a damaging cycle but have no clue how to make the change.  In other situations, they feel that they do know how to fix the problem, but their partner is just refusing to listen.  It can be very frustrating, and couples can start to wonder if change is even possible.  However, change is very possible once you know the right steps.

How can couples counseling help?

During your first couple’s session, we explore the main relationship concerns and goals from both partner’s points of view.  The goal is to create a safe environment where both partners can really feel heard and important issues can be addressed effectively.  From there, we can create a custom treatment plan that will address all the topics and skills that need to be addressed to get your relationship on the right path.

Below are a few common examples of topics discussed in couple’s sessions:

  • Finding the true root cause of unnecessary conflict
  • Building upon your relationship’s strengths
  • Avoiding common pitfalls that keep couples from making progress
  • Keeping calm during difficult conversations
  • Having fair and productive disagreements
  • Being assertive while being respectful of your partner
  • Expressing and meeting emotional needs
  • Developing greater emotional and physical intimacy
  • Healing from past disappointments
  • Rebuilding trust and boundary setting
  • Working as a team to complete important goals

Couple’s services includes: general couples counseling, pre-marital counseling, marital counseling, same-sex relationships, blended family therapy, and discernment counseling

Relational counseling for individuals is also available for those who will be coming in alone but still wish to work on their part of improving the relationship.  This option is especially helpful for those whose partner refuses to come to a session or those who feel the main relational issues stem from their own personal life, such as a traumatic childhood or past relationship.
