About Me

Danielle Smith, LMFT

I received my Bachelor's in Psychology from Georgia Southern University in 2011 and my Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy from Valdosta State University in 2013.  In my master’s program, I did not only learn how to work with couples and families but also how to work with relational psychotherapy as a whole.  Relational psychotherapy includes understanding how a person is affected by all their relationships, roles, and expectations, such as their family members, work environment, expectations of society, and even the relationship with their self.  Being able to see the whole picture helps me work more effectively with my clients and better understand how a person becomes who they become.

In 2020, I completed the training to become a Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist through the Trauma Institute. This specialization allows me to help my clients work through their past traumas and address the unhealthy coping behaviors, anxiety, or limiting beliefs surrounding their trauma experience.  I particularly enjoy helping my clients process the childhood traumas that are preventing them from reaching their highest potential and seeing them change negative lifelong habits.

I have always had a deep interest in learning more about all the different models of healing and how the body and mind affect each other.  This has led to my interest in learning how holistic models of healing can work with traditional therapy models for greater healing. Particularly, I have found that meditation can be a powerful tool when combined with other psychotherapy exercises. I received clinical meditation training as a part of my master’s degree program and additional training to complete Loka Yoga’s meditation teacher course as certified through Yoga Alliance.

I am very passionate about my work as a therapist, and I consider therapy my calling.  I have always been very emotionally sensitive and empathetic towards others.  Being sensitive can make life a bit more challenging at times, but as a therapist, it gives me an advantage and helps me truly connect with my clients.  It is very important to me that my clients feel safe and comfortable throughout the therapy process.  I feel change happens best when clients know they are safe from judgment and their needs will be respected.  For this reason, I am very careful to work based on my client’s belief system on subjects surrounding religion, sexual orientation, or gender.

My personal hobbies include many forms of art, ranging from pastels to photography.  As an artist, I am constantly finding inspiration in the innate beauty and potential of the people and the world around me.  It is also this ability that drives me to be so passionate about helping my clients see the beauty and potential in themselves.

I see my role as a therapist to be a guide through the rough terrain of life.  I can guide you in deciding what path may be best, provide support and encouragement if you stumble, and teach you the skills you need to overcome the trickier barriers that may be in your way.  The goal of our time together will be to empower you to be able to navigate and overcome barriers on your own.
